What Carriers Ask

The controls underwriters treat as table stakes

These ten items dominate real cyber insurance questionnaires, and increasingly, carriers verify rather than trust.

MFA

MFA Everywhere

Multi-factor on email and remote access is the closest thing to a universal requirement. No answers here end applications.

EDR

Managed Endpoint Protection

Carriers ask for EDR by name now: protection that detects behavior, on every machine, watched by someone.

Backups

Backups That Survive

Offline or immutable copies with tested restores, because a claim after ransomware turns on whether you could recover.

People

Training on Record

Documented security awareness training, since the human click is where most claims begin.

Hygiene

Patching & No Dead Systems

Monthly patching and no end-of-life systems in production. Unsupported software is a growing exclusion trigger.

Honesty

Answers You Can Prove

Misstatements on applications have voided real claims. The goal is answering yes truthfully, with evidence.

Why It Tightened

Why insurers got strict, and what it means for you

Ransomware losses reshaped the cyber insurance market. The result is a checklist economy, and it is navigable.

Questionnaires became gatekeepers

A decade ago coverage was a signature. Today missing controls mean declines, exclusions or painful premiums.

Renewals are the ambush

Businesses discover the new requirements at renewal, with weeks to implement MFA or EDR fleet-wide. Early beats panicked.

Claims get scrutinized

After an incident, carriers compare reality to your application. Controls you claimed but lacked can void the payout entirely.

Exclusions hide in the middle

Policies increasingly exclude losses tied to missing MFA or unsupported systems. The fine print is where gaps get expensive.

Premiums reward proof

Documented controls do not just win approval, they measurably improve pricing and limits.

The list doubles as real security

Every item carriers demand is a genuine defense. Insurance pressure is, quietly, a decent security roadmap.

Questions

Insurance readiness, answered

Is this insurance advice? Will a good score guarantee coverage?

No and no. This is an educational check of the technical controls carriers commonly require. Coverage decisions belong to insurers and your broker. What we do is make the technical answers true.

Which single control matters most?

MFA on email and remote access. Many carriers treat it as an absolute prerequisite, and its absence is among the most common reasons for declines and exclusions.

What is EDR, and is my antivirus enough?

EDR (endpoint detection and response) watches behavior and enables response, beyond traditional antivirus scanning. Questionnaires increasingly name EDR specifically, and managed EDR is what we deploy.

Can I just answer yes and fix it later?

Dangerous. Misrepresentations on applications have voided real claims after real incidents. The only safe yes is a true one, which is exactly the gap we close.

How fast can the gaps be fixed?

MFA and access controls in days. Managed EDR and backup changes within a couple of weeks for most small businesses. Training and documentation run alongside. A renewal a month out is usually workable.

Do you see my answers?

Not unless you send them. The check runs in your browser, and your result reaches us only if you submit the form for your free plan.

Will this help my premium too?

Documented controls commonly improve pricing, limits and terms, though outcomes vary by carrier and market. Your broker negotiates; we make sure the substance is there to negotiate with.
